HIP Supports Repeal of Prop. 209

Join HIP and other community members in support of SCA 5, a constitutional amendment that would help create educational opportunities for historically disenfranchised communities by overturning Prop. 209.Since its passage, Prop. 209 has correlated with significant drops in admission and enrollment of students of color. Among Asian Americans, Prop. 209 has prohibited the use ethnicity—masking the community’s immense diversity and significant educational disparities. SCA 5 is a necessary and important step in recognizing California’s diversity. Its passage will help California’s world-renowned public universities attract and enroll a student body that meets high academic standards and reflects the cultural, racial, geographic, economic, and social diversity of California.

Unfortunately, in recent weeks, a large, vocal and well-financed contingent of the community has joined with conservative lawmakers and the Republican party to drum-up fervor around this issue. Using fear tactics and mistruths, this group has built significant momentum online and on social media. This momentum has also translated to political pressure that caused some Democratic elected officials to withdraw their support.

On Monday, Asian Pacific Islander American Public Affairs (APAPA) will host a town hall discussion about SCA 5. During a similar event last weekend, hundreds of individuals opposed to Affirmative Action created a very hostile and anti-SCA5 environment. We hope to change the narrative around this discussion and hold the opposition accountable for their mistruths and racist statements. Your mere presence will significantly shift this discussion and create a voice for those in our community who have been silenced.
